An interview with artist, Anya Gupta

Image
On Sunday 20th December, I had a video call interview with Anya Gupta (she/her); an up and coming, indie pop artist, currently based in Boston, USA. We talked about her music, song writing and creative process, musical influences, and her new album, "i (don't) know you", which dropped on the 18th. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to talk to anya, and thank her for being so honest, graceful, and well-spoken during our interview. When did you first find your passion for music? What instruments do you play? "I  started playing guitar in 5th grade and it was because a lot of my guy friends at the time and a lot of them played electric guitar. for some reason, at a young age I was told that it was 'a boys instrument', so I decided to prove everyone wrong. I started playing electric guitar as my first instrument and that's how I started getting really into bands like 'lincoln park' and 'U2', a lot of bands my parents would pl

how is fast fashion impacting the trend cycle?

Image
before I get into answering this question I want to define 2 terms: fast fashion: fast fashion is mass produced, trendy and cheap clothing. fast fashion stores include shein, zara, h&m, new look and prettylittlething.  the reason their clothes are so cheap is because they use inexpensive materials, like polyester, and manufacture their clothes in factories in countries with less strict labour laws.  basically, clothes made in factories with workers being paid barely anything -> clothes are transported into stores and sold -> more money goes to people at the top (because barely any is going into making safe working conditions, paying workers or making quality products).  the trend cycle: the trend cycle is the way in which clothes spike in popularity, then decrease, become hated and then make a comeback.  one recent example of this is mom jeans or high waisted, straight leg jeans, which were popular in the late 80s and early 90s. however in the 2000s (ten years later), low ris

Image
on Saturday 1st may, i had a video call interview with Mia Alexander (she/her), the creator of feministgrrrl.com . we talked about her website, intersectionality and shared feminist resources. this was my first time ever interviewing someone, and i was very grateful for the opportunity to talk to Mia.  who is Mia Alexander? Mia Alexander is a 16 year old junior in high school based in Washington DC and, as I've already said, is the creator of feministgrrrl.com. A direct quote from her website:   " I created the Feminist Grrrl newsletter to share writings about feminism, intersectionality, and broader political topics. Feminist grrrl's number one goal is to promote sisterhood and solidarity between women." when/ how did you first discover feminism? "I first learned about feminism through Taylor Swift, actually, she had an article about it in a magazine where she was talking about the sexism she had faced in the music industry. I had already been a fan of  Taylor

Intersectional Feminism

Image
illustration by Tyler Feder. what is intersectionality? the term was first coined by Kimberle Crenshaw in 1989- a scholar and civil rights activist. However even though she coined the term, she was not the first to address the issue. One of the women who spoke about intersectionality before her was Sojourner Truth, an American abolitionist and womens rights activist. The definition of intersectionality is... intersectionality /ษชntษ™sษ›kสƒษ™หˆnalษชti/ noun the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.
